FDM vs. Resin – What is the Difference?

Two technologies dominate the consumer market for 3D printers: FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) and MSLA/Resin. Both have their place, but for different use cases.

How Does FDM Work?

FDM printers melt a plastic filament in a heated nozzle and deposit the material layer by layer on a print plate. Like a hot glue gun robot, it builds your object from bottom to top.

The result is objects with slightly visible layer lines, more or less pronounced depending on settings. With a layer height of 0.1mm, FDM prints already look very good.

How Does MSLA/Resin Work?

Resin printers dip a print plate into liquid photopolymer resin. An LCD display projects UV light through the resin and cures it layer by layer. The object is pulled from the resin from top to bottom.

The result: extremely smooth surfaces and finest details – barely visible layer lines even at 0.05mm layer height.
