The Bambu Lab A1 is Bambu's most affordable model and clearly targets beginners. It costs around $300 and aims to bring the ease of use of the P1S into a more affordable package. We tested it extensively for several weeks.
Bottom line upfront: The A1 is one of the best beginner printers we have ever tested. Almost too good for a "beginner printer".

Build Quality and Assembly
The A1 arrives almost fully assembled. The few assembly steps are completed in under 15 minutes. The build quality is exceptionally good for the price:
- Sturdy aluminum profile frame
- High-quality extruder unit
- Solid linear bearings
- The only criticism: the power supply cable could be better
Initial Setup
The Bambu app guides you through setup. From unboxing to first print in under 30 minutes – that is impressive. The automatic calibration works flawlessly and you don't have to worry about anything.
Print Quality
The print quality of the A1 is excellent – especially for this price range. In testing with PLA:
- Layer height 0.2mm: Excellent results, barely visible layer lines
- Layer height 0.1mm: Impressive detail accuracy
- Overhangs up to 45°: No problem without supports
- Bridges up to 50mm: Good results
Speed
The A1 is fast – significantly faster than older printers. In testing with a 40g Benchy (benchmark model):
- Normal mode: 28 minutes
- Sport mode: 18 minutes
- Ludicrous mode: 12 minutes (with slight quality loss)
Software: Bambu Studio
Bambu Studio is excellent. The slicer is intuitive, offers many features and the integration with the printer is seamless:
- Real-time print monitoring via app
- Cloud slicing possible
- Good presets for all common materials
- OrcaSlicer as alternative for advanced users
